Crafting Overview

Crafting is the process of manufacturing any item or component that cannot be looted.

There are three different crafting methods available:

  • Crafting without a CD (such as crafting ammunition)
  • Crafting with a CD (such as crafting weapons or tools)
  • Crafting with a player-made CD (such as crafting armor pieces)

There are three different CD types available:

  • MFP - A CD used for crafting item components
  • ASP - A CD used for crafting a final item that may or may not need MFP components
  • CDD - A CD used for creating armor piece ASPs

Crafting Without A CD

Not all Terminals require a CD to start the manufacturing process.

Crafting ammunition, refining or mixing resources, and crafting some components are some examples of crafting that does not require the use of any CDs.

For many non-CD components, prior successful research is required at the Compound Research Terminal before it is possible to craft them.

The resources required to craft an item or component that does not need a CD can be found by choosing it from the list on the left of a given terminal window.

If a Terminal requires a CD to start the manufacturing process, the terminal will slide a CD out of both the left and right sides when you open it. The image above shows what this looks like.

CDs contain manufacturing programs that tell the terminal how to create the item. These are sometimes obtained as a "reward" (looted) when crafting an item or component by using an ASP or MFP CD. To the right is a tool that requires both an ASP and MFPs to craft the final item, a Steel Pick. The resources required to craft the item or component can be seen by right-clicking on the CD, which opens the information window.

Most CDs are available for immediate use when received - the only ones that are not immediately usable are CDDs.

The following terminals can use a CD to manufacture items or components:

Not all CDs are immediately usable when they are obtained. Sometimes the player must create a usable CD out of a non-usable CD. A special type of CD is partly ready to use, but needs to "programmed" with a number of specifications. This is how armor piece CDDs are turned into ASPs.

To create an armor ASP, you need 1x CDD, a minimum of 1x Protection Chip and 1x Blank CD in any Storage locker in the same zone as the terminal. The ASP Compilation Terminal allows you to create a variety of armor piece ASPs by choosing from a wide number of options.

Once created, an armor ASP is used in the same manner as above to create armor pieces, but only by using an Armour Craft Terminal.

Preparing To Craft

  • AWD to pay the terminal fee must be in your AWD Wallet
  • Required resources must be in the storage of the same zone as the terminal
  • MFP or ASP (if necessary) must be in the storage of the same zone as the terminal
  • Some resources need to be refined before being usable for crafting
  • Many non-CD components need to be researched before crafting them is possible

Refining Resources

Refining produces half as much of a resource as what is put in, so putting 10kg of an unrefined resource, for example, results in 5kg of refined resource. The terminal refining fee is 0.01 AWD (1 AWC) to refine between 1gr and 4kg (0.001kg through 4.000kg). So 4.001kg through 8.000kg costs 0.02 AWD, 36.001kg through 40kg costs 0.10 AWD, 40.001kg through 44.000kg costs 0.11 AWD, and 396.001kg through 400kg costs 1 AWD.

To create a smaller amount of any resource (split a stack), double-click the resource's icon, highlight the number (the total amount in the stack) and enter the desired amount. 0.001 = 1gr, 1.000 (or just 1) = 1kg, 10.000 (or just 10) = 10kg.

Each resource type is refined at a specific terminal:

To refine a resource:

  • Open the appropriate terminal and click the Refine button.
  • Drag the amount of resources desired to be refined from the storage window into the empty square in the terminal's refining window.
  • Click the Confirm button, then the Accept button. The main terminal window will show the resource being refined, how long it will take, the amount being refined, and the cost of the terminal fee.

When completed, there will be a message in the top section of the chat window about the refining process's completion, including the amount of refined resource and any extra resources created in the process, such as common slag. The refined resource and any extras can be found in the first open spaces at the top of the same storage used to provide the unrefined amount.

Non-CD Component Research

For many non-CD components, such as Alloys, prior successful research at the Compound Research Terminal is required to find the right amounts of the needed resources before the non-CD component can be crafted. Once research is successfully completed, it is no longer necessary or possible to do research for that item.

The Compound Research Terminal's fee is not AWD, but Promissory Micro-Notes (PMNs). The fee is based on the availability of resources used to craft the component and ranges from 2 to 24 PMNs.

The Crafting Process

Crafting in AfterWorld is always successful as long as you have the required skills, resources, and AWD to make a particular item or component. Items crafted from ASPs typically need non-CD components and often need MFP components before they can be crafted.

Crafting Non-CD Components

Non-CD components can be crafted at many terminals by clicking either the Mixing button or the Components button. A commonly-used terminal for mixing is the Foundry Terminal, which is used to create metal alloys and other components. A commonly-used terminal for components is the Mechanic Components Terminal, which is used to create many different mechanical components.

  • Open the appropriate Terminal, click Mixing or Component, click the desired category, then the desired component from the list on the left. Click the Continue button, highlight the yellow '1' in the box and type the desired amount, then click Continue.
    • The number corresponds to different amounts for different component types. 1 unit for alloys is 1gr, while 1 unit for mechanical components is 1 component.
  • Drag the required resources in the exact amounts stated from the storage window to the terminal window - if the amount is not exactly correct, you can add the missing amount or double-click the resource to split off the extra amount, or just remove the resource and replace it with the correct amount.
  • Click the Continue button, then the Accept button to complete the process. The main terminal window will show the component being crafted, how long it will take, the amount being crafted, and the cost of the terminal fee.

When completed, there will be a message in the top section of the chat window about the crafting process's completion, including the amount of component(s) created and any extra resources, such as metal slag. The component(s) and any extras can be found in the first open space(s) in the top section of the same storage used to provide the required resources.

Crafting Components with an MFP

Components crafted with an MFP do not have repairs or conditions since they cannot be used directly. Crafting multiple components requires more resources and AWD - two components costs twice as much and uses twice as much resources, three components requires three times as much of both, and so on.

  • Open the appropriate Terminal, click the New Task button, drag the MFP for the component you want to craft from the storage window to the empty square in the terminal window, highlight the yellow '1' and type the desired quantity of the component (if more than one), and click the Continue button.

When completed, there will be a message in the top section of the chat window about the crafting process's completion, including the amount of component(s) created and any "rewarded" CDs. The MFP, component(s), and any extra CD can be found in the first open spaces at the top section of the same storage used to provide the required resources.

Crafting Items with an ASP

Items crafted with an ASP can either be made with no repairs (0/100% condition), or several repairs (up to 30/100% condition at this time). Crafting with repairs does not require any extra resources compared to a 0/100% item, but it does cost extra AWD. Crafting multiple items requires more resources and AWD - two items costs twice as much and uses twice as much resources, three items requires three times as much of both, and so on. All item crafting produces 100% condition every time.

  • Open the appropriate Terminal, click the New Task button, drag the ASP for the item you want to craft from the storage window to the empty square in the terminal window, highlight the yellow '1' and type the desired quantity of the item (if more than one), and click the Continue button.
  • Drag the required components and/or resources in the exact amounts stated from the storage window to the terminal window - if the amount is not exactly correct, you can add the missing amount or double-click the component/resource to split off the extra amount, or just remove the component/resource and replace it with the correct amount.
  • Click the Continue button, then the Accept button to complete the process. The main terminal window will show the item being crafted, how long it will take, the amount being crafted, and the cost of the terminal fee.

When completed, there will be a message in the top section of the chat window about the crafting process's completion, including the amount and condition of item(s) created and any "rewarded" CDs. The ASP, item(s), and any extra CD can be found in the first open spaces at the top of the same storage used to provide the required resources.

Disk Management

At the Disk Management Terminal you are able to:

  • Recycle CDs (ASP, MFP, or CDD) to produce a small amount of resources used to create Blank CDs.
  • Replicate 0% CDs (ASP or MFP), which uses up one repair but produces a 0/100% CD in return.
  • Upgrade ASPs from 0% V1 to 100% V2 and up, up to 100% V10 for ASPs that started with 10/100% condition.

MFC Professions

Each ASP item, MFP component, and non-CD component has an associated MFC Profession level based on the availability of the resources required to make the part.

To gain skills in an MFC Profession, you have to craft items, components, or components in the desired category. For example, to gain Profession MFC Metallurgy progress, you have to craft metal alloys at the foundry. When stage 0 has progressed to 100% for any level (pictured below), the next level of this profession is gained, allowing crafting of the next MFC Profession level's items or components. In addition, a random minimum Skill may be required to craft something in the next level. The skill requirement becomes then permanent for crafting at this level of this particular MFC Profession. If you attempt to craft something that requires a higher MFC Profession or Skill level than what you have, you will receive a message stating what the required MFC Profession or Skill level is. However, if you do not yet have the MFC Profession level required and there is also a Skill level requirement, the message will only state what MFC Profession you need until you gain that level. Only after obtaining the necessary MFC Profession level will you receive the message stating what Skill you need and the required level of that Skill.

To get access to each successive level of a given MFC Profession, you must craft the appropriate items or components (a.k.a. "parts") from the current Level until you reach 100% of "stage 0," as shown in the image below: Image:New_Profession_Level_Message.jpg‎

As shown, crafting Melee Weaponry parts that are listed as Level 1 on the Profession MFC Melee Weaponry page raises your manufacturing profession progress. Each part raises the progress by a different amount, so experimentation is useful. When your progress for Level 1, stage 0 reaches 100%, Level 2 will be "unlocked."

  • Craft Level 1 parts until stage 0 progresses to 100% to get access to Level 2
  • Craft Level 2 parts until stage 0 progresses to 100% to get access to Level 3
  • Craft Level 3 parts until stage 0 progresses to 100% to get access to Level 4, and so on

Crafting parts from the same Level many times results in additional stage gains. Each stage gained in a given Level results in reduced crafting times for items or components of that Level. For example, crafting many different Dagger Pugio blades, hilts, and final daggers (and crafting daggers with multiple repairs) will raise your MFC Melee Weaponry progress through stage 0, stage 1, stage 2, etc. Each higher stage results in shorter crafting times for Level 1 MFC Melee Weaponry items.
