Mining Overview
Mining is the process of collecting resources from under the ground. This is different from picking stones (collecting resources from rocks above the ground) and is typically called underground (or UG) mining in the game.
Underground mining is split into two categories: Metal Ore and Mineral Ore. Each category requires different scanners (ore locators) and extractors (ore collectors). Each scanner and extractor requires certain attached components in order to function.
Metal Ore Equipment
- M.O.S.K Scanner
- SimEng Battery
- Implosion Drill
- Orpull Extractor
- En-Cel Battery
- Container
- Drill Bit
Mineral Ore Equipment
- Mi-Sca Scanner
- SimEng Battery
- MR Charges
- MextraX Extractor
- En-Cel Battery
- Container
- Drill Bit
Equipment Categories
Different resources can be found at different frequencies and at different depths. For this reason there are many tools for mining, but higher equipment includes the capabilities of lower equipment. For example, a green Mi-Sca MQ 178 Tiger scanner can locate any mineral resource that can be found from 0m to 200m underground at an of the frequencies between 82Mhz and 178Mhz and a green MextraX MB-L1 Bru extractor can collect any mineral resource from between 0m and 200m underground. A complete list of available tools and their capabilities can be found at the Tools page.
| Type | Color | Depth | Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scanner | yellow | 100m | 82 / 114 / 146 Mhz |
| Scanner | green | 200m | 178 / 210 / 242 Mhz |
| Scanner | red | 300m | 274 / 306 / 338 Mhz |

| Extractor | yellow | L4 / Mod-4 | 0.066 kg / cycle |
Scanners
Scanners are crafted Tools that employ microwave technology to detect underground resources. They are relatively easy to craft compared to extractors because the required resources are more common, but crafting either tool is a complicated process due to the number of sub-systems and components required. Like all crafting, you must unlock higher levels of manufacturing skills to craft each higher scanner or extractor.
You must use batteries to power scanners as well as needing one Implosion Drill (for M.O.S.K. scanners) or one MR Charge (for Mi-Sca scanners) for each scan (ore location attempt).
A scanner battery's charge capacity is indicated with a number from 0.5 to 0.9. Batteries must be charged at the Power Charge Terminal before first use. The higher the maximum frequency that a scanner can detect ores for, the higher the battery is required in order to use the scanner, even if only scanning for lower-frequency ores. For example, to use a Mi-Sca MQ 178 Tiger, a 0.7 [verification needed] battery is required to use the scanner even if the scanner is only set to find minerals at 82Mhz. However, you can also use higher-capacity batteries than the minimum in any scanner, which requires fewer batteries and recharge trips. Each scan attempt uses a fraction of a percent of battery condition, with higher batteries giving more scans per one percent.
The scanner and battery will decay with each scan attempt, even if the attempt is not completed for any reason. Once you start the scan process, the decay happens immediately.
You must stand still while scanning is in progress or the process will be "interrupted" and you will lose the Implosion Drill or MR Charge and drain the battery but no scan attempt will be made.
Extractors
Extractors are Tools that extract resources from underground by using drilling technology. They are more difficult to craft compared to scanners due to less-common resources being required, but crafting either tool is a complicated process due to the number of sub-systems and components required. Like all crafting, you must unlock higher levels of manufacturing skills to craft each higher scanner or extractor.
You must use batteries to power extractors as well as needing one container and one drill bit of the same level (yellow, green, or red) as your extractor (Orpull Drill-Bit or MextraX Drill-Bit).
An extractor battery's charge capacity is indicated with a number from 40 to 160. Batteries must be charged at the Power Charge Terminal before first use. The higher the maximum depth that an extractor can collect ores at, the higher the battery is required in order to use the extractor, even if only extracting shorter-depth ores. For example, to use a MextraX MB-L1 Bru, a 60 [verification needed] battery is required to use the extractor even if the extractor is only collecting a mineral at 20m underground. However, you can also use higher-capacity batteries than the minimum in any extractor, which requires fewer batteries and recharge trips. Each extraction cycle uses a fraction of a percent of battery condition, with higher batteries giving more cycles per one percent.
The extractor, drill bit, and battery will decay with extraction of the ores and the extracted ores will fill up the container one space at a time. When you detach an extractor and reattach it to the same or another claim, the ore extracted will go into the next available container space. You can detach your extractor from a claim if needed to change the battery, the drill bit, or the Container and reattach it to the claim as long as the claim marker has not expired.
Standing still is not required while using an extractor.
Scanning Process
There are two categories of resources to mine using your mining equipment: metal ore and mineral ore. This tutorial describes the procedure for mining for mineral ore. The procedure for metal ore mining is almost the same except that the scanner buttons and animations are not the same.
Prepare Scanning
Attach a SimEng battery and MR Charges to the scanner. Attach an En-Cel battery, a container, and a drill bit to the extractor.
Drag your scanner and extractor onto your quickbar. Go to any zone you prefer and equip the scanner by pressing the corresponding quickbar number, then activate it by pressing the number again (or change to avatar mouse mode - with the cross-hair viewable - and click the left mouse button). A new window will appear indicating that your scanner is in operation and shows a reminder to stand still while scanning is in progress.
Select Frequency
Choose one frequency or more from the control panel window, depending on the minerals you want to search for.
Initial Scan
Press the Initial Scan button to start the scanning process. If your scanner detects a mineral, it will display which one it has detected. If it does not detect any minerals it will display "No Resources Found".
Deep Scan
Before the minerals can be claimed, a deep scan must be performed by clicking the Deep Scan button. When the deep scan is completed, detailed information about your find will show the mineral found, and its location, depth, and approximate yield. In addition, a dot will appear on the control panel's "radar" panel (this animation has been temporarily disabled by the devs to prevent a bug from occurring).
If you close your scanner's control panel before performing a deep scan, the find will be lost and re-scanning will not find it again.
Claim Now
If you want to claim the found resource, click on the Claim Now button and a claim marker will appear in the landscape.
If you close the scanner's control panel at any time before clicking the Claim Now button, the find will be lost and re-scanning will not find it again.
Claim Marker
To begin extracting, you will have to find the claim marker in the landscape somewhere nearby. A claim is marked with a large blue light that points skyward, directly above your claim's location underground.
Attach Extractor
Move to within 5m of the claim marker and equip your extractor. Place your extractor on top of the marker by "using" it: press the quickbar number again or change to avatar mouse mode (with the cross-hair viewable) and click the left mouse button.
Claim Info
Right-click on the extractor to open the extractor's control panel window. In this window you will see the size of your claim and the amount of time it will take to extract the minerals with the extractor you are using. Different extractors and drill bits have different extraction times for the same amount of resource.
Activate Extraction
Click the Activate & Close button to start the extraction process. Once the window is closed, the extractor will begin to your collect the minerals.
Extraction Completed
When all of the minerals have been extracted, a message will appear above chat window showing which extractor is finished, the amount and name of the mineral collected, and the zone and coordinates of your extractor. The extractor sometimes collects less than the approximate yield shown by the scanner, so the extractor's control panel window will show something larger than 0kg next to "Left for extraction" and you'll be able to click the Activate & Close button again.
Detach Extractor
Go back to the zone and coordinates listed to pick up the extractor by standing close to it (within 5m) and right-click on it to open the control panel. Click the Detach button to get the extractor back into your inventory.
Container
The resources are located in the container that is attached to your extractor. Double-click on your extractor in inventory to detach the container (as well as the battery and drill bit) from the extractor. The capacity of a Container KD-L is 50kg, so be sure to empty it after mining a large claim or many small claims, because your extractor will stop automatically if the Container KD-L is filled to capacity. If this happens, you will have to detach the extractor, double-click the extractor, open the container, remove some resources, then re-attach the battery, drill bit, and container to the extractor and re-attach the extractor to the claim to finish collecting all of the mineral.
Mining Tips
Mining in areas further away from revivals and walls will more likely yield claims since they are not heavily mined. The same is true with areas densely populated with creatures.
Claims disappear after about 45 minutes if an extractor is not attached in time.
Scanning in the same area will sometimes yield many claims of different resources, especially if each type of scanner is used.
Keep an eye on your chat window's top panel for messages that say something is going on with your extractors. Sometimes they will stop suddenly due to a jam, and they will always stop if the extractor, battery, or drill bit condition gets to 0% (sometimes only 1% for batteries).
You can make your own markers on the in-game map to relocate your mining spots later.
Happy Mining!
